Autumn is a wonderful time to visit Yellowstone. The crowds are mostly gone, and the weather is cooler. The animals are out and about as they prepare for winter. If you have a hankering for a hike, I have one for you. It isn't too strenuous so it would be perfect for the whole family.

Welcome to Fairy Falls; a hidden gem in Yellowstone located in the Midway Geyser Basin. There are two trailheads and two different approaches to reach Fairy Falls. Either park at the end of Fountain Flat Drive or park 1 mile south of Midway Geyser Basin at the Fairy Falls Parking Lot.

This is a 5.4-mile or a 6.7-mile hike there-and-back depending on which way you want to go. Plan to spend about 3 to 5 hours on this one. Wait... depending on which way to go? Yup. From the trailhead, walk 1.6 miles through a young lodgepole pine forest to the falls. You can continue 0.6 miles to Spray and Imperial geysers, which adds 1.2 miles to the trek. Your choice. I suggest going further to the geyser, but either is wonderful.

This is a beautiful hike, that will take you through lodge pine forests and lush landscapes, and in the fall, the colors are even more beautiful. There will be some surprises along the way such as:

But the main attraction is Fairy Falls. One of Yellowstone's prettiest falls at 200 feet high. And below, a beautiful blue pool. It's inviting on a hot day. This would be a lovely spot for a picnic, but have bear spray with just in case
